For our first introductory games studies project at Lincoln University I have been tasked with making a one button game. Although a game that only requires one button seems like an easy task – making a fun, unique and not repetitive game is actually rather difficult. After testing several ideas out using ‘The Game Maker’ I decided on working on a bomber style game in which you play a virus tasked with destroying ‘x’ number of layers in a firewall
I’ve decided to go for a pixelly retro feel for the game – reminicent of the arcade games of olden times – I’m debating wether to add in an ‘Insert 1 Coins’ title to the opening page!
The player has to clear the screen of the firewall before the virus gets to the bottom of the screen – the longer the player takes to destroy the firewall, the faster the virus moves towards the bottom of the screen – increasing the risks of a crash and game over.
To make the game more interesting I’ve added in several types of block to destroy – there may be more to come as the day goes on and I’ll post an update if there are. The extra blocks add more variety to the game and break up the otherwise boring sea of orange gridige.
THE DATA BLOCK
The data block is the only type of block so far that the player gains a score from destroying.
THE UNSTABLE CODE BLOCK
This block – when hit by a bullet, EXPLODES! I’m hoping this one can be used in chain reactions to wipe out firewalls quickly.
THE SHIELD BLOCK
The player has to shoot these blocks 3 times before they are considered destroyed. (They change colour after damaged.)
That’s enough for now… I need to go film something for Creative Technologies…
